When it comes to choosing a gym, the number one question you need to ask yourself is … Am I actually going to use it?! Here are 5 tips that will help you make the right choice and find a gym you’ll enjoy visiting time and time again.

1) Location - choose a gym within 15 minutes drive.

By far and away… or not as that case may be… location is the most important factor to consider when choosing a gym. Your dream gym with state-of-the-art equipment, deliciously toned personal trainers and a bargain membership package is useless to you if you’re put off by the journey and never even get there. Chose a local gym within 10 to 15 minutes of your front door or workplace, so you don’t have the age old excuse of not having the time to get there.

2) Facilities - choose a gym with facilities that suit your goals.

Are you joining a gym to get a six-pack, tone up, or just be a little healthier? If fitness or weight loss is your goal, then look for a gym with a good selection of cardio equipment - rowers, steppers, treadmills, bikes and cross trainers. If muscle building or toning is your goal then look for a gym with a good free weights section. If you simply want to improve your health then choose a gym with a good sauna, steam room and café - the treats will give you a reason to get to the gym in the first place!

End Your Chronic Back Pain Without Medication

How often do you get out of bed with a stiff back? OR reach to pick up the newspaper, feel a tingle and suffer through the rest of the day with a heating pad or an ice pack?

According to the American Chiropractic Association, 85% of Americans have lower back pain at any given time. You are not alone in your pain.
The important thing to know is that it wasn’t reaching over to get the newspaper that made your back go out nor was it how you got out of bed. Your back and leg muscles were already tight so it took only the slightest effort for those tense muscles to pull on a bone or push on a nerve causing you pain and discomfort.

The good news is that with only a few minutes each day of simple muscle stretching, you can break this pattern and end recurring back pain. Chronic pain can be managed without expensive medication. The biggest culprits that are to blame for your suffering are: Tight Hamstrings, the muscles at the back of your thighs, or a Tight Piriformis, the muscle that goes across your buttock from your hip to your tailbone. Keeping these muscles healthy and strong is the fastest way towards better back health. “Retrain your Body, Regain your Health” that’s my motto. And it works! I’ve seen people limp into my workshops with grimaces on their faces and walk out smiling. Now you can too!

Chronic Low Back Pain Relief - What Kind of Mattress is Best?

In a recent nationwide survey on back pain, most survey participants reported using a firm mattress with a 2 cm plywood bed board between it and the box spring. But many of those who expressed the most enthusiasm about their sleeping arrangements suggest omitting the box spring and putting an extra-firm mattress on a platform bed.

If you have the option, don’t use a brand-name mattress. Instead, have a foam-rubber company make you a, 15 cm (6 inch) thick, extra-firm mattress. It’s less expensive than purportedly corrective mattresses and at least as firm and comfortable.

Futon mattresses on platforms are the next choice of US survey participants. But if your hips, buttocks or thighs are painful, you will probably find the futon too thin and hard, and the cause of unwelcome pressure.

If your bed is too hard (as may be the case with some ‘orthopedic beds’), try placing a duvet between the under-sheet and the mattress. This gives a softer surface, especially for a more petite sleeper. Remember that what feels firm to someone of 50 kg (8 stone) is very different to what feels firm to someone of 115 kg (18 stone).

Of the 15 US survey participants who turned hopefully to water beds, 8 switched back to firm mattresses and bed boards, complaining that the bed couldn’t be made hard enough to suit them.
